High potential and gifted education

Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.

At our school, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.

Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?

Recognising potential and developing talent

Our teachers find potential and nurture our students to be the best they can be.

Tailored lessons

Each student has different abilities. Teachers respond to each student’s ability by providing extra challenges and extension activities to keep learning exciting and engaging.

Rich opportunities and activities

Students can take part in opportunities to develop their talent in the arts, sport, leadership and more.

Opening doors to wider experiences

Our students can participate in a wide range of state-wide opportunities that aim to extend and enrich student potential.

What is high potential and gifted education?

High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.

We do this through:

Our high potential and gifted education opportunities

Our students engage with  HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.

"There have been opportunities for my children to participate in extension groups for additional learning. In addition the opportunity to participate in external programs/competitions, e.g. public speaking, spelling competitions and Tournament of the Minds" — a parent of Emu Heights Public School

In our classroom

In our classrooms, students benefit from a teaching approach that is thoughtfully differentiated to meet the diverse needs and abilities of every learner. Teachers incorporate open-ended tasks into the curriculum that encourages exploration and creativity, allowing students to engage with content at a level that matches their individual strengths and interests. By incorporating higher-order thinking strategies, such as analysis, evaluation and problem-solving, our teachers challenge students to deepen their understanding and develop critical thinking skills within a supportive environment.

Flexible grouping is another key element of our instructional practice, enabling students to collaborate with peers who have similar or complementary abilities. This approach ensures that learning experiences are appropriately tailored and that each student is both supported and challenged.

Teachers maintain high expectations for all students and draw upon their detailed knowledge of individual abilities to foster inclusive classrooms. These environments celebrate diversity in learning and promote academic growth, enabling every student to reach their full potential.

Across our school

Our school offers a comprehensive High Potential Gifted Education program designed to nurture and challenge students with exceptional abilities across a variety of disciplines.

In the area of writing, students across all age groups are actively engaged in collaborative brainstorming sessions aimed at enhancing their creativity and generating innovative ideas. Students in Stage 2 and 3 have the unique opportunity to collaborate in the development and production of a student newspaper. This initiative encourages creative expression, critical thinking and teamwork.

Our mathematics program is tailored to students with a strong aptitude for challenging problem-solving tasks. These students actively engage with complex mathematical concepts and participate in the Maths Olympiad. This rigorous program aims to develop their analytical thinking and perseverance while providing a supportive group environment where students inspire one another to achieve excellence.

Additionally, our drama group offers gifted students an enriching platform to showcase their creativity and flair within the performing arts. This program cultivates confidence, self-expression, and collaboration.

Our school offers a diverse range of sporting opportunities for students who wish to develop their athletic skills and compete at various levels. Students are encouraged to trial for PSSA (Primary Schools Sports Association) teams across a wide variety of sports, providing a pathway for talented athletes to represent our school in inter-school competitions.

Together, these High Potential Gifted Education opportunities ensure that our students are well-supported to thrive academically, creatively and in the sporting domains.

Across NSW

At Emu Heights Public School, we are committed to supporting the growth of our high potential and gifted students. We collaborate closely with the NSW Department of Education to provide access to statewide enrichment programs. Our team assists students with entries, preparation, and reflection to ensure each experience contributes meaningfully to their learning journey.

Our students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of prestigious statewide competitions and programs designed to extend and enrich their talents. These include the Department of Education’s School Spectacular, Premier’s Spelling Bee, and the Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition.

Through these experiences, we encourage our students to challenge themselves, develop new skills, and celebrate their achievements in a supportive and stimulating environment.
